Skills to Profit Initiative (SPI)
Unemployment is a prevalent phenomenon in Ghana, especially among young professionals, vocational & apprenticeship training graduates. Majority of the Ghanaian youth especially the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) graduates are faced with the problem of lack of jobs and funds to start their own businesses after completion of their training. This has led to high rate of unemployment in our societies today (ISSER, 2017). Research has proven that majority of the graduates wish to establish their own businesses however, they struggle to raise the necessary capital. The time to raise capital takes months to several years, depending on the financial situation of the craftsperson. Many crafts-persons never even achieve opening their own shop, as they are not able to generate the required funds. As a result, craftspersons engage in, for example, working from home or “work and pay” which do not help them in any way and are generally characterized by low-profit margins leading to poverty (ISSER, 2017).
